How important is emotional and social intelligence in the workplace? Some say the work environment is not the place for "touchy-feely" stuff. Others say it is very important. A workplace culture that blocks discussions about feelings, ignores the emotional impact of downsizing, won't acknowledge the stuggle of balancing work and family, or sends out a message of "all work and no play" is open for trouble. Feelings don't go away. They go underground; they impact decision-making, health and safety, and respect. They may explode at any time, unless they are dealt with.

Your employees' ability to excel in interpersonal relationships is critical to the success of your organization. We expect our employees to demonstrate emotional empathy towards customers, excellent interpersonal relationship skills with co-workers, balancing assertiveness and independence with team members, and optimistic leadership. Who says these are the "soft" skills? These are the "tough" skills!

This workshop will begin in the same place where companies take stock of their corporate fiscal position - the audit, the emotional intelligence audit. We use the EQi, Emotional Quotient Inventory. It is based on 19 years of research by Dr. Reuven Bar-On. Over 85,000 individuals have used it worldwide. The EQi measures one's ability to deal with daily environmental demands and pressures, and helps predict one's success in professional pursuits. It measures items such as: Problem Solving, Flexibility, Reality Testing, Stress Tolerance, Impulse Control and Emotional Self-awareness.

The good news is that skills associated with emotional intelligence are acquired and can be improved through training, making the EQi a valuable instrument for identifying potential areas for improvement and for measuring the effectiveness of organizational development programs. The bad news is that this does not happen overnight. Identifying and modifying behaviors associated with strong emotional intelligence is a process, not an event. It requires experiential and classroom training, one-on-one coaching, a commitment to change and time.
